4 days 8 hours to the Paralympics – Winter is here… again…

March 9, 2010

There is snow in our mountains!  Heck, while volunteering on Monday I saw snow actually falling in the Vancouver Athlete’s Village!  It was odd snow.  Something in between hail, slush and snow, but it was solid precipitation and it was white, so I think it counts.

Winter has a funny personality in Vancouver, and we Vancouverites react oddly to it.  Mostly Winter is mild, and usually wet, but it can also dump snow on us or put together strings of record high temperatures.  Vancouverites react to mildness and rain without much notice, snow with something resembling horror and sun with smugness (we do after all live in the most beautiful place in Canada, just ask us!).  And what about weather like this?  Cold, with bits of snow after weeks of sunshine and warmth (remember… we don’t notice rain).  Well, we’re shocked.  And pouty.  It’s cold outside!  What?  How is that possible?  There will be some complaints and lamenting, but I’m sure we’ll survive somehow.  Anyway, as much as I miss the warmth, it is only March, and we do have the Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Winter Games to celebrate still, so a bit of cold weather and snow does seem appropriate.

Past the weather it is pretty quiet in Vancouver, though I can feel the energy rising a bit.  It does feel much like the week leading up to the Olympics did.  A tension is building.  I think a lot of people are looking forward to the next round of competition.  I certainly am.  It’s been a treat to be volunteering in the Athlete’s Village again.  Most of the ice sledge hockey and wheelchair curling competitors are here now and they do visit the Salt Building fairly regularly.  Sometimes just for the wireless internet but also for games and television.  They’re really super friendly and I hope I have a lot more time to get to know some of the athletes.

I think that’s going to be it for now.  I know my posts are a bit short lately but I think it is more due to continuous sleepiness than lack of excitement.  ‘Cause I’m certainly excited but sleep time is good too (hmm… maybe not quite enough sleep in February… 🙂 ).  Until the next one.

Thank you merci!
