Olympics Day 14 – Canadian Women are Golden!

February 26, 2010

It was all about the Women’s Gold Medal Ice Hockey match between Canada and the USA.  My brother is good friends with #5 Colleen Sostorics, defence for the Canadian Team.  Actually, she had a whole fan club show up, a tonne of my brother’s friends from university.  This made for and exciting day.  We started at 11am at the Wicklow pub for breakfast and some pre-game warm-up.  By we I mean a vast array of folks – my parents, my brother and I, an aunt and uncle, three of my friends and then the Sostorics cheering section of around 12 people.  Then we all headed to the game, dispersing around the stadium to cheer Canada on!

And what a game!  Our women came out strong (both of our goals were scored by Poulin!) but in the end it came down to goal-tending.  The shots on net were almost identical for the two teams but Szabados managed to keep everything out of her net.  It was awesome, and at times hard to watch.  But we won and it was wonderful!!

After the game the group of us all reassembled at the Soho Billiards hall for some food and beverages and celebrations.  We watched Joannie Rochette skate to Bronze.  It was a great place to watch her skate – they actually turned the music down and turned up the televisions so we could all hear her music and cheer along.  Every single person in a pool hall in downtown Vancouver stopped to watch her skate, it was amazing as well.

I was pretty tired from the night before so headed home around 9pm but my brother stayed out with his friends to continue the celebration.  They went down to Coal Harbour to see the Olympic Cauldron and not long after that got a call from Colleen to join the whole Canadians women’s team in celebrating at Molson Canadian Hockey House.  I can’t imagine what a wonderful experience that would be!  I’m a little jealous, but mostly so thrilled for our women!  And also for Canada!  Go Canada Go!!

Here are some photos of the day.

I saved this picture to post after the Game so that I wouldn't ruin the surprise. This is what Anna and Leslie were crafting at our house the other night! Go Sostorics #5! Go Canada!

I am so enjoying your pictures and seeing your entire support team…looks like a nice family…and to think you started out in Revelstoke about an hour North of here….anyway, I have a question for you!
As a gardener (for pleasure) I have been dying to know what exactly is in those green bouquets they are handing out to the medalists. Any chance you would have the inside scoop that would assure me they are not a bouquet of broccoli…or broccoflower???? LOL

      Hi Cynde,
This is what I found on the bouquets –
“The predominately green bouquets contain eye-catching green hypericum berries, delicate green spider mums and broad leaf greens. The foliage consists of leatherleaf fern, loops of monkey grass and aspidistra leaves. A simple royal blue ribbon is hand tied around each bouquet and the handles are also wrapped in recycled paper.” from the Canadian Florist website.
Thanks for reading, and yeah, my family is pretty great!! Hope you’re having a great time!
      Happy Olympics!

Andrea — what a great afternoon/night; Katie and I had a blast we screamed ourselves out cheering for Canada. The goaltending was just amazing and our Canadian gals killed off TWO 5-on-3’s that just showed their commitment to hockey. Thanks so much for the opportunity to join you and your family and the Sostorics-section. AWESOME — the men’s team should be so lucky to build the same record in the Olympics.

Loving the pics and the details – had such a fabulous time it’ll be hard to beat! Thanks again to you and your fam for making us all feel so welcome – and for supporting our various crafting and cheering section endeavors! Don’t think we’ll be seeing you tonight, our hosts here in White Rock have been so gracious and we haven’t seen one of them the entire week! We’ll hopefully see you when we drop by in the morning, thanks again and enjoy the game!
