Olympics Day 4 – Figure Skating practice and GOLD!!!

February 16, 2010

Another early morning but this time I was heading to see figure skating practice at Pacific Coliseum with Cathy.  Our tickets to the practice meant that we could be there from 7am to 1pm but we did not make it quite that early.  We weren’t terribly late though and were in our seats by 8am, just in time to see the end of Evgeni Plushenko’s practice skate, and then in another group we got to see Patrick Chan!  There were several men’s practice sessions and then after another ice cleaning (they clean the ice between every practice session) we got to see the pairs figure skaters!  It is stressful watching them do throws and lifts on television, it’s even worse in person!  Sadly both Canadian pairs were set to practice just after 1pm so we could not stay to watch them.  We headed out, right at 1pm and caught the bus back downtown.

Patrick Chan bowing to the audience after his practic session. The girl on the ice is one of many that skate out with buckets of snow and ladles to fill in gouges in the ice.

Cathy and I stopped at my Royal Bank branch to get the new Lucky Loonie that was released on Friday, February 12 (limit of 5 per customer) and ended up pin trading with my account manager and the Branch manager!  I got a really neat RBC Valentine’s Day pin in exchange for a Torch pin!  Pretty sweet.  Then it was time to head home for a nap and to get ready for the evening’s Victory Ceremonies.

My new RBC Valentine's Day pin!

The Victory Ceremonies were great!  I went with my Mom, dad Doug, and Justin and besides there being wonderful entertainment we got to see Alex Bilodeau receive Canada’s first Gold Medal on home soil!  The crowd went wild, mad really!!  We screamed and whistled and cheered and had an absolutely wonderful time.  We were all so noisy that you couldn’t hear the the announcer introduce Alex, but as my mom said, we didn’t need to hear her, we know who he is!  It was wonderful to be in that crowd when they raised the Canadian Flag and we all sang O Canada!  They whole stadium rang with our voices and our cheers when it ended.  I hope Alex is ready for a crazy couple of weeks because everyone in Canada is going to want to meet him!  We’re all so proud!

Thank you merci!

Canada keeps owning the podium, and I love it! Makes me want to sing “O Canada” like The Canadian Tenors did at the private opening of Canada Olympic House, atop Hudson’s Bay Co. (a client) in downtown Vancouver. The YouTube video of “O Canada” by The Canadian Tenors is now available http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eygQ7P38Oh4 Go Canada Go!
