12 days 5 hours to go – The scavenger hunt stories…

January 31, 2010

I think the 2010vanfan Photo Scavenger Hunt was a success!  Eight people came out which was perfect for four teams.  I know others had planned on coming but weather and lurking cold symptoms kept some away, which I certainly understand!  This is not the time to be sick, we all have too much to do and too much excitement and fun to miss!  The four teams were: Nancy & James – the Travelling Canucks, Elaine & Goldie, Stephanie & Joyce (from Scotland!), and Cathy (who had driven from Kamloops that morning to be there!) & Andrew.  We all met at the Coca-Cola Pin Trading Centre in the Olympic Superstore at about 11am, we discussed how the game is played, I answered some questions and sent them off with eight clues.  Here is what they had to try to solve, find and photograph:

1. Your ETA is 24 minutes. Find the place where you can see and learn about EYVRYTHING under a glass dome.

2. Where the Rings and Agitos fly, Look for Ice Light in the sky.

3. At the west end of our recent arrival from Brussels, look for a rainbow where children can play and shop.

4. While flags normally flap in the air, these are hard as rock, take photos of four at least, as you take a Walk.

5. On the banks of north False Creek Happiness has grown, many tents you may also find but photograph the cabin that is lone.

6. Far beneath where soon we’ll fly, through the bright Vancouver sky, take a photo of the whale that cleans the ice with its tail.

7. Bringing us ever closer, photograph both sides with a poser, on one we’re close not two weeks away on the other we have to wait another 28 days.

8. The whole world on a wall, come here last of all. If perchance you’ve found a pin, don’t forget to bring it in, if you stick it on Timbuktu, there may be a new pin for you.

I even sent the questions to two others so they could play virtually (solve the clues and then find photos on the internet of the answers).  I’ll list the answers to these questions at the bottom of this post if you’re interested.

There was some fierce competition, there was some touristing around, there was interest and support from random strangers on the street.  It sounds like there was general hilarity as well.  I have posted everyone’s photos of their journeys up on a 2010vanfan Photo Scavenger Hunt album.  There are a lot of smiling faces as well as photos of all sorts of things that they saw along the way besides the answers to the clues.

Cathy and Andrew made it back in first, about two minutes ahead of Nancy and James, however… some of Cathy and Andrew’s solutions were a bit… creative.  😀  Elaine and Goldie got in third with Joyce and Stephanie rounding out the group.  The final standings were:

1st place – Nancy and James – winners of a large COLD-FX Vancouver 2010 men’s fleece, a large COLD-FX Vancouver 2010 t-shirt, 2 COLD-FX Sliding Goalie pins, and a 7.5″ Miga plushie (donated by Northern Gifts).

The Gold Medal winners - James and Nancy!

2nd place – Elaine and Goldie – winners of a COLD-FX Vancouver 2010 6-pin pin set, a COLD-FX Vancouver 2010 Cheering scarf, and a 7.5″ Quatchi plushie (donated by Northern Gifts).

The Silver Medal Winners - Goldie and Elaine!

3rd place – Stephanie and Joyce – winners of a COLD-FX Vancouver 2010 Hockey pin set, a Don Cherry Mug (donated by COLD-FX), and a 7.5″ Sumi plushie (donated by Northern Gifts).

The Bronze Medal Winners - Stephanie and Joyce!

Runners-up – Cathy and Andrew – winners of 2 COLD-FX Sliding Goalie pins and a 7.5″ Mukmuk plushie (donated by Northern Gifts).

The Runners-up - Cathy and Andrew!

I would like to extend my gratitude and the ‘thank yous’ of all of the participants to the donors of the prizes for the 2010vanfan Photo Scavenger Hunt – COLD-FX and Northern Gifts.  The prizes are really fabulous and will be much cherished by all involved!

Click on the hockey player for contests and more information about COLD-FX.

Northern Gifts is the official licensee for plush Mascot toys. They are wonderful people to work with (must have something to do with them being toy-makers 🙂 ).

After all the teams were back in, and the photos were downloaded we headed to Doolins for a bit of pre-Olympics Irish House cheer (and food, we were all hungry!).  Stories were told and laughs were had.  It was a pretty fun day.  We even got to see an unicycling busker on Granville Street after dinner.  I just wanted to mention him because his unicycle is something like 12′ (4m) tall!  He was really fun to watch and drew an impressive crowd.  I am pretty sure that I heard him say he’ll be around through the Games so keep your eyes out for him.

Alright, I’m off to the Pacific Pin Club trading extravaganza so I’ll post more later!  Thank you merci!

Hi Andrea (pronounced Ondrea), after following your blog for the past 5 months it was so great to finally meet you for the 2010vanfan digital photo scavenger hunt! I was quite worried when I first read your clues but my amazing Scottish partner Joyce and I put our heads together and after much frustration and angst we managed to decipher your cryptic rhyming clues. Congratulations to Nancy and James on winning the “gold” medal. As Joyce said…we were “slow but sure” and even though we arrived back an hour after Nancy and James we were ecstatic that we won the “bronze” medal. I ate my yummy bronze medal before we left the pub! I bumped into Andrew on the 5th floor of the Bay looking at the international Olympic clothes that were just starting to be put on the racks. Andrea, thank you so much for putting on this scavenger hunt…I had so much fun being a tourist with Joyce…sorry we got a wee (new word I learned from Joyce) bit sidetracked. You have such enthusiasm, energy and spirit and I look forward to reading your blog every day.

Yes, thank you very much to COLD-FX and Northern Gifts. I love the mascots!!! I take the regular strength COLD-FX 200mg capsules daily for cold and flu prevention and take the extra strength 300mg 3-day regimen at the first sign of a sore throat. I have dodged a few colds last year because of this.

    Have fun pin trading!

We enjoyed meeting and hanging out with Vancouver 2010 enthusiasts! Thanks to you and fellow competitors for fun times and COLD-FX and Northern Gifts for the great prizes!

It was a blast! I’m so glad everyone had fun. I’ve had a few people asking if I’ll be doing another… unfortunately I don’t have time to plan one before the Olympics but Rob suggested I plan a ‘bridge’ scavenger hunt between the Olympics and Paralympics and that sounds like a fabulous idea to me. Stay tuned for more details, though I probably won’t have too much time to think about it until late February or early March!
      Thanks – Andrea

Thanks again Andrea, and keep up the great work! 🙂
Your enthusiasm for the games has convinced me to forgo my trip to Hawaii and attend the games instead, I purchased tickets today for some of the events! 🙂

    Hi Andrea,

Thanks so much for organizing the photo scavenger hunt!! Goldie and I both had a lot of fun traveling around the city. After successfully solving your challenging clues, I realized I had learned so much about the Olympics from reading your blog!

It was great to meet you and all the other participants as well… too bad we didn’t have time to join you guys at the pub after the game but hopefully we will see you around during the Olympics or at one of your next events!

Keep up with all your great posts! 🙂
