20 days 18 hours to go – LunarFest, Korea House & more…

January 23, 2010

A few quick updates for you:

Michelle kindly let me know that the Korean Olympic Committee is setting up their National House in the Hyatt Regency in downtown Vancouver.  Her source has told her that there will be food, beverages, performances and a free gift!  I have looked at the Korean Olympic Committee’s website but if my French and German are bad, my Korean is truly non-existant.  If you can find anything on the site I’d be happy to hear from you!

Granville Street will be a hub of excitement for the next several weeks.  Today, on the opening of the Cultural Olympiad, LunarFest opened on Granville Street between Robson and Georgia.  Many of the sculptures had been going up over the last few days but today they were all lit creating an amazing spectacle.

This piece is called Totem Lanterns. I love it!  The Canadian Totems are designed by Carey Newman.  The Totem Lanterns were constructed by Jian-Erl Lin.

Confucian Fusion by Bruce Voyce

Part of the Lantern Forest. 2010 lanterns were created by school children for this piece.

There were people everywhere looking at the installations, and interacting with many of them too such as the one I got to play with yesterday.  If you’re downtown this is not to be missed, especially at night!

If you’re looking for things to do during the Games, do check out my Vancouver 2010 Venue map, but also be sure to check out Vancouver 2010 Olympics Free Events Guide by CityCaucus.  They’ve got a great list of things to see and do for free!

Last up… don’t forget to keep sending in your Vancouver 2010 Spirit photos for a chance to share your excitement and to win a pin!  Get the details here.

And I’ll be working on setting up the 2010vanfan photo scavenger hunt over the next few days.  If you are keen to participate and have some hours free on Saturday, January 30th then drop me an email at so I have an idea of numbers.  More details will come in the next day or two.

Right, that’s it for tonight.  Thank you merci!

Have you heard anything about good places to go and watch the Opening Ceremonies (maybe outdoor jumbotron or something similar, or other ideas?) We’re arriving mid-day but do not have tickets for that evening. Can’t believe it’s almost here. Love your blog – thanks!!!

      Hi David,
I’m not really sure what public places they will be broadcasting the Opening Ceremonies to. Maybe the LiveCity sites and the cinemas that will be showing the Games. I will check around some and try to post a better answer soon!
Thanks for asking and thanks for reading!

    Hi Andrea

Will these installations at Granville St be up only before the games? I hope they are up throughout the games otherwise I shall miss them!

How great are those little lanterns made by the kids!
Oh, I think I need that lit totem instead of a Christmas tree this year, so fabbo!
