25 days 7 hours – A very windy morning and Bike Valet

January 18, 2010

I woke up to what sounded like thunder this morning… but thunder that never stopped.  I live pretty much under the Granville Street Bridge and when the wind blows the banners on the lamp posts flap around.  In a wind like last night they don’t just flap, they snap and crack!  It was so loud here.  I recorded a short video so that you can hear it.  Click here to see it.

When it finally got light enough to see (it was a dark and stormy morning) we took the dog for a walk along SeaWall.  The water was very high.  I haven’t seen such a high tide before.  The ramp for the little ferry dock by Sunset Beach actually sloped uphill!

The Burrard Street Bridge with the False Creek Ferry dock going uphill. Granville Island and the Swiss House (Bridges) are in the background.
It was a very wet morning. Even the sand beaches had puddles on them.

Are you an avid bike rider?  Are you going to be attending events or the LiveCity sites during the Games?  If so you should know that there will be a bike valet available at seven locations related toVancouver 2010.  They will be at BC Place, Canada Hockey Place (GM Place), LiveCity Yaletown, LiveCity Downtown, the Vancouver Olympic and Paralympic Centre (Hillcrest), Pacific Coliseum and the Olympic Village Station (on Canada Line).  You will be able to leave your bike or otherhuman-powered vehicles at this site free of charge (I think, don’t hold me to that part) and you’ll get a ticket to claim your bike back later.  The program will be run by BEST (Better Environmentally Sound Transportation) who have been running the same program at Farmer’s Markets and events across Vancouver for quite some time.

If you’re looking to work during the Games, BEST is hiring bike valets until January 22nd.  They will be paying between $15-$18 per hour.  If you would like more information on employment click here.

One last bit for now: if you’re on Facebook and part of the Vancouver 2010 Workforce you may be interested in becoming a fan of ‘Team 2010’.  It’s billed as ‘The faces and stories of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games workforce‘ and only has 1122 members so far.  There are more than 25,000 volunteers plus VANOC and related staff.  I’m sure we can get more people signed up and we will all be able to share our stories!  Just search Team 2010 on Facebook today!

Talk to you again soon.  Thank you merci!

I cycled down Quebec Street today. What a mess. Two directions of cyclists and pedestrians jammed onto a tiny sidewalk. I think I’m going to have to bike on Main Street for the next two months.

I really enjoy all the pictures you have put up from around the city and the progress of the different sites. I’ve never been to Vancouver before so it really gives me a good picture of what to expect when I come up from the states for the games. Thank you and keep up the good work!
