97 days to go – Yay for Toronto!

November 7, 2009

Today Toronto found out that they will be hosting the 2015 PanAm Games!  It sounds like the city will be getting some improved transit as well as some more housing to help accommodate an event of this size.  This is a summer-sport event and is an excellent way for a city to show that it is ready to host a Summer Olympics.  Anyhow, congrats to Toronto!

Other news –

The Olympic Torch travelled from Yellowknife to Grande Prairie today and it sounds like another wonderful day!  Only 32 days until I head to Montreal to check out the city and the Torch Relay for the first time!  Thanks to everyone for suggestions for my free time in Montreal!  I really can’t wait!

Next up, the bartenders at YEW Restaurant + Bar in the Four Seasons Hotel Vancouver have come up with three Olympic cocktails that sound incredibly yummy made with premium Canadian ingredients!  Why three?  There’s a Bronze, Silver and Gold drink that correspond to the three Olympic events that have been held in Canada.  The Bronze is for Montreal 1976, the Silver is for Calgary 1988, and the Gold is for Vancouver 2010!  Check out the descriptions here!  Better yet let me know if you’re interested in joining me to try them one day!!  Sounds like these bits of Olympic-ness need further investigating!

There are athletes all over the world that overcome adversity and sheer oddness sometimes to compete in the Olympics.  I just read today about Shiva Keshavan, a luger from India!  Yes, from India.  India does not have a luge track, nor does Shiva have a complete sled, however he is competing at a high level world-wide and is starting to earn himself some sponsors!  As India has no other lugers there is a very good chance that he will be able to compete at Whistler for the Vancouver 2010 Olympics!  Unsurprisingly he has been likened to the Jamaican Bobsleigh Team from Calgary 1988 and I am sure will be a crowd favourite should he attend!  If you would like to support Shiva I just found that he has a fanpage on Facebook!  He’s only got 16 fans so far including me, but I think if 2010vanfan readers got on board he’d have a lot more so sign up today!  Good luck Shiva!  We’ll be cheering for you!

Also, I got an email from Travis Jones today, which is pretty cool.  I wrote a post that included Travis a few months ago now.  He is a talented young up-and-coming Aboriginal athlete from Pouce Coupe, BC and has been featured on one of the “Find Your Passion in Sport” Olympic Posters.  Thanks for emailing Travis!  You can read more about Travis here!

And lastly, don’t forget to enter for a chance to win a Mascot Birthday pin! (No, I still don’t have a photo… I’ll get one tomorrow!).  The Mascots will be celebrating their 2nd birthday this month (November 27th!).  If you’d like to win a Mascot Birthday pin of your very own post a comment answering the following questions before 5pm on Sunday, November 8th!

Question: What word is Mukmuk’s name derived from?  And what was the original language?  I will put your name into the draw a second time if you can tell me what sports equipment is in Mukmuk’s burrow in his intro video on the Vancouver 2010 website!

OH!  And I nearly forgot!  If you are still looking to get tickets to some Olympic events, then log onto your ticketing account on Vancouver2010.com before 10am.  At 10am they will open the waiting room and people will be randomly selected to enter into the purchasing area!!  The rumour is that there will be some tickets available to the Men’s Gold Medal Hockey Game… hey, it’s worth a shot!  Good luck to you!

I’m not being mean or anything but I am really happy that things went wrong on Sat. for the ticket release. I was having so much fun in Vancouver and had no access to a computer to purchase anything. Now I will have a chance to get in on the action. If I should be lucky and get tickets, they will be the only ones I’ve purchased for Wade and I and we all know it will be HOCKEY HOCKEY HOCKEY.
