163 days to go – Vancouver 2010 coins in your pocket…

September 1, 2009

Today I got a hockey coin and a bobsleigh coin in my change.  Have you found Vancouver 2010 quarters or loonies in your change?  Are you collecting them?  Are you a coin collector and collecting the specialty coins as well?

So far, the Royal Canadian Mint (Vancouver 2010 Official Supporter and manufacturer of the medals!) has released 11 of 12 Vancouver 2010 quarters to circulation (with date released): Curling (February 23, 2007), Hockey (April 4, 2007), Wheelchair Curling (July 11, 2007), Biathlon (September 12, 2007), Alpine Skiing (October 24, 2007), Snowboard (February 20, 2008), Freestyle Skiing (April 16, 2008), Figure Skating (November 18, 2008), Cross-Country Skiing (January 15, 2009), Speed Skating (March 12, 2009), and Bobsleigh (June 23, 2009 – currently available from the Royal Bank and Petro-Canada), the last to be released is Ice Sledge Hockey (March 18, 2010).  In the coming months the Royal Canadian Mint will also be adding three 25¢ coins celebrating the top three Canadian Olympic Moments as chosen by the public!  Sounds intriguing…  Besides the quarters in circulation there will be two “Lucky Loonies”.  The first was released July 23, 2008 and the second will be released on February 15, 2010!

I’m going to have to look through my change to see if I have all of the Vancouver 2010 coins currently in circulation.  If not I guess I’m getting myself to a shop that sells one of the sets (as seen above) for $29.95 (does not include the three ‘Olympic Moment coins’).  Or, better yet, if you would like to display the coins that you have, the Royal Canadian Mint says that you can stop by Petro-Canada to get your FREE Collector Coin Card for all 17 of the Vancouver 2010 circulation coins!  So stop by, grab your card and get collecting!  (Admit it, you have a coin jar, look through it and see what you have!).  As far as I can tell there will only be 10,000 of each of these coins made.  That’s really not many, and they will be a collector’s item!

Are you a hard-core coin collector??  Well, the Royal Canadian Mint has you covered.  There are Mascot coins (individual coins, coins in hockey pucks, coins on a card, an album for the cards or a set), uncirculated coins, silver coins (~$55+), silver coins with holograms (~$72 each), silver coin sets, a silver wafer (~$90), and silver kilo coins (~$1600!).  There are also gold $75 coins (~$500 each), gold coin sets, and gold kilo coins (up to ~$54,000!!).  So whatever your budget there’s a coin (or set) for you!  (I think I may stick to the circulation coins!).

So, whether you’re an avid collector or a much more general enthusiast like me, there are coins to suite you.  I don’t know about you but I’ll be heading to Petro-Canada tomorrow to get my Coin Collecting Card.  It’s a nice inexpensive way to be involved in something really big.

Besides coins, I just want to remind you that we have the Women’s Hockey Canada Cup on in Vancouver this week!  Two games again today.  The 3:00pm game was USA vs SWE, and the United States beat Sweden 7-0.  And this evening’s 7:30pm game was CAN vs FIN, where Canada won 10-2!  Caroline Ouellette and Rebecca Johnston both got hat tricks!  And Colleen Sostorics (whom I’ve written about previously) was busy too!  I’m hoping to be able to meet with someone from the team this week to ask some questions though I am definitely aware they’re busy and focused.  If nothing else, I’ll be at the Gold Medal Game!  Go Canada Go!!  And you should go too!  Tickets are cheap and this is great hockey!  Get your tickets here.

Off to bed.  Thank you and merci for reading!

      Hi William!

Thanks for writing to me. I believe that all the Petro-Canada gas stations should have the coin collector cards available, but you can also request one from the Royal Canadian Mint online at and they will mail you one for free. I hope you’re having a lot of luck finding all of the coins!

Hi, would you be able to let me know if there is a possibility of still finding some 2010 Olympics coin holders. I have gone to the bank and they told me to contact the Canadian Mint, but l can’t get through to the website to order the cards. It keeps coming up blank. Would really like to get some if l still can

        Thanks for commenting Kathrine.

I’m afraid it seems that the Mint doesn’t have the cards available any more but you could try your local Petro-Canada gas stations or Royal Bank branches. Some of them seem to still have a few around.

        Hope that helps.

      Hi Magriet,

The 3 moment spaces are for the coins currently being released by the Royal Canadian Mint. In September they released the “Men’s Gold – 2002”, on November 17th they released “Women’s Gold – 2002” and on January 5th they’ll release “Cyndi Klassen’s 5 medals – 2006”. These coins should be available from any Royal Bank branch. A small number of them even have the maple leaf coloured red! I’ve been getting a few rolls from my bank to get a nice supply of coins 😀

You can read a bit more on one of my earlier posts here

      Hope that helps!!

      Thanks Tess!

Sorry, the Olympic Moment coins were voted on a long time ago. It was for Olympic Moments before the Vancouver 2010 Games. There are three – Men’s Gold Hockey in Salt Lake City 2002, Women’s Gold Hockey in Salt Lake City 2002 and Cyndi Klassen’s 5 Medals at Torino 2006.

      Good work Lauren!

I don’t think that the Mint has the cards available anymore unfortunately. However, some people seem to be having some luck in finding them still at Petro-Canada gas stations. Another place to check would be Royal Bank branches as they had some cards as well. Hope that helps, and thanks for reading!

Do you think there could still be the collector cards around?
i am a big fan i really want one card to keep my coins in.
do you think the mint may still be giving them or any other petro-canada stations?

Sorry I’m slow in replying. Maybe, try your local Petro-Canada stations or RBC branches. It seems like the Mint has stopped sending them out but a phone call or email may scare some up.

      Thanks for commenting!

Sorry it’s taken me so long to respond – I have been away travelling.

I’m not sure if anyone will have the collector cards left but your best bet is to check at your local Petro-Canada stations or Royal Bank branches. You could also try calling the Royal Canadian Mint. They do not have them available online anymore, but they may have some kicking around somewhere if you ask.

      Thanks for reading!

Sorry Marise – I don’t have any coin holders. Maybe check with friends and neighbours as the companies that had them seem to be out as well.
