187 days until the Opening Ceremonies – A Bay full of excitement!

August 8, 2009
The Bay Downtown is really going all out for the Olympics! The Bay is a sponsor and is designing the Team Canada uniforms, but the “Bay Downtown” has all sorts of things going on!

The Bay Downtown at Granville & Georgia
If you’ve been to the Bay Downtown over the year or more on the Main Floor you would have seen the Olympic Shop, where all sorts of merchandise to do with Vancouver 2010 and the Canadian Olympic Team is sold. If you have been in fairly recently you will have noticed that the handbag, shoe and nylon sections of the Main Floor have been moved and the area is blocked off behind large white walls advertising the Olympic Superstore. And ‘Superstore’ seems an entirely appropriate name!

The Superstore will take up about 2/3rds of the Main Floor (20,000 square feet!). It will have a Coke cafe and a ‘pin wall’ (dangerous for me!). The design has already won awards and it’s not built yet! Everything is meant to be easily accessible and the displays simple, attractive and fun. There will be sections for kids-wear, Mascot merchandise, hard-goods (such as pins and picture frames), and several others. This is the first time that the Olympic Superstore has been hosted inside an existing retail outlet. Normally a large white tent is set up but by going inside it should be much more inviting. I am very much looking forward to seeing it (and possibly working in it…).

But the Bay Downtown isn’t stopping there! They have dedicated part of their sixth floor to be the “Canada Olympic House” for the duration of the Games. The Canada Olympic House is the athletes ‘home-away-from-home’. This is where athletes, their families, coaches, training staff and government and corporate guests can go to get away from it all. Or for special events, such as parties for medallists! Unfortunately, the Canada Olympic House is not open to the public but I am impressed at the effort to make our athletes feel at home. I am sure it will be a great experience for all.

More? Yup, there’s more. On the fifth floor, an area traditionally used for Christmas decor will be housing team jerseys from various countries, including Canada, USA, Germany, and the UK to name a few! It’s going to be colourful and inviting (Go Canada Go!!).

So if you happen to be walking through downtown Vancouver during the Games or in the next few months, take a few minutes to check out the Bay. The Olympic Superstore is scheduled to open October 1st, but until then the Olympic Store is open. Who knows, maybe I’ll see you there!
