209 Days ’til the Games – A stroll through the Vancouver Village

July 17, 2009

Went for a stroll along Seawall past the new Olympic Village. It is coming along though there still seems to be a lot of work to do. I am sure that they’ll get it done in time but I’m also sure the pressure is on.

Anyhow, the new length of Seawall is looking fabulous. A great mixture of stone, wood, metal and plantings. And of course fabulous views! So I thought I would post a few of these for those not able to visit the area often or at all.

The designers have used a lot of pieces that are reminiscent of the industrial history of False Creek. And there has been a lot of it! It is really only since the lead up to, and the result of, Expo ’86 that a lot of this land has started being developed into housing and park lands. It was a land of rail yards, sawmills, foundries and shipbuilders for a long time, before that, rainforest like most of the land was in Vancouver, full of Douglas fir and Western hemlock, and tidal flats along the water. Significantly, False Creek was about twice the length that we see today and five times the area!

The website thechallengeseries has some great information. I do plan on reading it more closely as this area played a significant part in Vancouver’s history, and invite you to do the same. It has this map in a larger size so that it is easier to read. The darkest blue is the 2008 shoreline, medium blue is City of Vancouver data from 1939, light blue is from a 1906 Atlas of Canada and the lightest blue is called the “original” shoreline from a historical atlas. The three squares represent the “historical” feeling the planners are trying to invoke in the different areas.

Here are some of the other photos I took on my walk, BC Place (love the symmetry with the new foot bridge) and Science World. The views from the Village really are something special. I hope you all have a chance to take a walk and see the latest addition to Vancouver’s waterfront sometime soon!
